The First Board Meeting of the 6th Session of The Iraqi Business Council & Election of the Chairman, Deputies, Secretary-General & Heads of Committees

The new Board of Directors of the Iraqi Business Council, its 6th session, held its first meeting on Monday, October 31st 2022 at the offices of the Iraqi Business Council in the presence of nine out of 13 members, achieving the quorum.

 

During the meeting, the Chairman, two Deputies, Secretary-General and Heads of Committees were elected, and as follows :-

 

  • Majid Saedi / Chairman of the Iraqi Business Council and Head of the Foreign Relations Committee and Academic Sector.
  • Saad Naji / Deputy, Secretary-General and Head of the Social, Cultural & Entrepreneurship (social responsibility) Committee.
  • Nazar Awji/ Deputy & Head of the Tourism Investment Committee.
  • Ali Shamara / Board member & Head of the Investment Committee.
  • Ahmad Al-Sarraf / Board member and Head of the Services & Transport Committee.
  • Hassan Nassir Al-Lami /Board member and Head of the Financial & Banking Sectors Committee.
  • Tariq Al-Hassan / Board member & Head of the Industry Sector Committee.
  • Ali Ghalib Al-Khafaji / Board member & Head of the Oil & Gas Sector Committee.

The idea of establishing the Iraqi Business Council is based on the common desire generated by a number of elites. Those who are Iraqi investors and businessmen on the territory of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan unanimous in the importance of creating economic reference for them, as well as for those who wish to join them in order to maximize Iraq’s investment in Jordan, as well as to contribute actively to Iraq’s construction and reconstruction.

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary-General & Members of the Iraqi Business Council Delegation Participate in the “Jordanian Investment Forum with Iraq’s Kurdistan Region”

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary-General, Dr. Saad Naji, and IBC Board members; Mr. Ahmad Ismael Saleh, Mr. Ahmad Al-Amili, Mr. Muhammad Shanshal and Dr. Bashar Abdul Rahman, and representatives of (Alam Al-Taqa) “Energy World” Company Mr. Ghaith Al-Rawi and Mr. Bakir Al-Juburi, representatives of Isnad Company, Mr. Ahmad Rashid Dabdoub and Mr. Yazan Masa, and representatives of the Investment Bank; Mrs. Niveen Abu Sinneh and Mrs. Rasha Abu Saleem, in addition to IBC CEO and staff participated in the Jordanian Investment Forum with Iraq’s Kurdistan Region which was held on October 1st 2022 at the Landmark Hotel – Amman. In his speech in the Forum, Dr. Saad Naji gave a review on the establishment of the Iraqi Business Council in 2006, which is considered a forum for businessmen to exchange commercial opinions, ideas, information and provision of job opportunities through trade and social missions and introduction of investment opportunities existing in Jordan and Iraq, clarifying that IBC includes most of the Iraqi companies investing in the Kingdom.

Dr. Naji further added that the estimated value of Iraqi investment volume in Jordan amounts to 23.4 billion JOD distributed on various economic sectors, indicating that this investment does not include the Iraqi deposits in Jordanian banks.

He pointed out that the investment sectors where Iraqi businessmen invest in Jordan are distributed on lands and real estate sector with the value of 7.3 billion JOD, the industrial sector 4 billion JOD, tourism sector 5 billion JOD and the banking sector, exchange companies and Amman Stock Market 3 billion JOD.

According to the study presented by Dr. Saad Naji, Iraqi investments in Jordan are also distributed on the education and health sectors with the value of one billion JOD, transit trading companies and the head offices maintained by Iraqi companies operating in Iraq with business volume of 3 billion JOD and the fixed deposits in the Jordanian banks for purposes of obtainment of annual residence permits amounts to 100 million JOD.

The visiting delegation from Kurdistan Region included the Head of Cabinet, Dr. Omeed Othman, Head of Kurdistan Region Investment Commission, Dr. Muhammad Shukri, Head of Kurdistan Region Investors Federation, Mr. Ahmed Rikani, Head of Kurdistan Investors Federation – Sulaymaniyah Branch, Mr. Yassin Rashid, and a group of businessmen from major companies in Kurdistan.

From the Jordanian sides, the Forum was attended by Head of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, PM Hamdi Al-Tabbaa, a number of the Association’s members, Jordanian Investment Minister, Engineer Khairi Amr, and Jordanian Consul-General in Erbil, Mr. Fuad Al-Majali.

Global Principles for Empowerment of Women” Initiative

We are pleased to inform you that the Iraqi Business Council has joined the “Global Principles for Empowerment of Women” Initiative, which was launched by the UN Global Compact and the UN Commission for Women to assist the private sector to empower women economically and socially, build capacities, combat violence against women and promote equality between the two sexes at workplace.

We congratulate our IBC members on this achievement that embodies IBC goals in empowering women at all levels. Supporting them and developing their capabilities to reflect positively on work productivity.

This Initiative is regarded as a major means for companies progress and realization of sustainable development.

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary-General Participates in the Private Sector Forum (United Business 2020)

At the invitation extended by the Assistant of the Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer of the United Nations Global Compact, Mrs. Sanda Ogambo, IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary General, Dr. Saad Naji, and the Director General of the Private Sector Forum (United Business 2020), held by the United Nations Global Compact in presence and via video communication technology in New York – USA, participated on September 19th-21st 2022 in the Private Sector Forum (United Business 2020).

The event brought together Heads of States and governments, CEOs, corporate sustainability experts, business leaders, Heads of UN Agencies and civil society organizations led by the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and the Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the UN Global compact, Mrs. Sanda Ogambo.

The Private Sector Forum (United Business 2020)

The Private Sector Forum (United Business 2020) included a discussion on the assessment of the world state and addressing gaps as to progress and realization of business ambitions on the sustainable development goals.

The Forum sessions included a session on the renewable energy, financing mechanism for transition to renewable energy, the role of young professionals in stimulating innovation in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development and the role of business community in protecting the environment.

During his intervention in the Forum, Dr. Saad Naji talked about the importance of supporting the energy-poor countries, such as Iraq, whose lack of energy resulted from the mismanagement of resources, and Lebanon, which lacks resources to achieve energy sufficiency. Also, steps for financing economies to be fairer and more inclusive, were also discussed.

It is noteworthy that the Iraqi Business Council in Jordan was one of the first organizations that joined the UN Global Compact and worked on applying and implementing the ten principles of the Agreement in all its procedures and adopted sustainable development and social responsibility.

Chairman of the Iraqi Business Council, Dr. Majid Sadi, IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary-General, Dr. Saad Naji, IBC Board member Mr. Mekki Al-Faiz and a number of IBC members; Mr. Osama Al-Shemmari, Mr. Muhammad Shanshal and IBC Director General received on Tuesday September 20th 2022 at IBC offices the Chairman of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, MP Hamdi Al-Tabbaa, a number of the Association’s Board members and Board of Trustees, General Assembly and the Association’s Director General, Mr. Tariq Hijazi, to sign a memorandum of understanding aiming at supporting joint cooperation between the two sides and strengthening joint cooperation to serve and expand horizons of economic relations between the Jordanian and Iraqi business community.

Mr. Al-Tabbaa expressed his happiness with this cooperation. He reviewed role of the Jordanian Businessmen Association in enhancing Jordan’s economic and investment relations with various brotherly Arab and friendly foreign states, promoting the advantages, incentives and investment opportunities that Jordan enjoys through joint business council to which the Association is associated.

On the other hand

Dr. Sadi pointed out that Jordan plays a major role in receiving investors from the Arab world. ِAs Jordan is a symbol of tolerance and coexistence. Streesed that the priority in Iraqi imports is for Jordan, if it achieves competition in terms of price and quality. He also reviewed a number of projects that the government intends to announce as investment opportunities in Iraq. Especially in the fields of telecommunications, real estate development and reconstruction.

Mr. Al-Tabbaa pointed out the importance of working on exploring prospects for investment opportunities especially in the promising economic sectors of common interest, pointing out that the Iraqi market is one of the important markets for Jordan.

Mr. Al-Tabbaa also pointed out that Jordan enjoys several attractive investment advantages that provide investors with a safe environment for investment with multiplicity of free trade agreements and availability of many free and development zones.

Dr. Sadi stressed that the MOU will strengthen cooperation and exchange of know-how in various economic fields, pointing out the role of the Iraqi Business Council in developing Iraqi investments in many economic sectors and the interest of the Iraqi side to invest in Jordan and the Arab world in general, expressing his happiness at the signing of the agreement, especially with the existence of diverse opportunities on the trade and investment levels that can be exploited in developing the Jordanian – Iraqi relations.

The agreements aims

The agreements also aims at boosting cooperation between the two sides in holding relevant activates, conferences and forums that serve to boost the development of economic relations between members of both sides, enhance means of communications, provision of possible facilities in this respect, encourage members of both sides to participate in such activities, as well as cooperation to encourage and facilitate the exchange of know-how and information available to both sides on the opportunities of developing various economic sectors, holding strategic partnerships on the local, Arab and regional levels.

The agreement also aims to boost joint cooperation as to holding bilateral meetings with businessmen in fields of common interest, cooperation in preparation of studies, researches, statistics and joint reports in various economic fields, as well as cooperation in holding joint seminars and workshops in fields of common interest.

The two sides stressed the needs to work on developing a clear work plan through the signed memorandum of understanding. In order to promote the volume of bilateral investments in the interest of both sides.

The meeting aimed at discussing relations between the two sides and mechanisms of future bilateral cooperation, in addition to a number of issues, as well as a number of issues of concern to the business community on both sides.

During the meeting, Dr. Saad Naji affirmed that the Iraqi – Jordanian economic relations maintained their strength during the previous yeas despite all previous regional challenges, pointing out that the Iraqi investors in Jordan enjoy a number of investment advantages provided by the investment law, along with a package of incentives and exemptions.

Dr. Naji also pointed out that the Iraqi Business Council, which was established in 2006, includes among its members a group of elite Iraqi businessmen, numbering to 400 businessmen, representing nearly 3200 companies, who own various investments in various economic sectors mainly tourism, industry and general trade sectors.

The Iraqi Business Council aims to maintain continuous networking between the two countries.

During the meeting, it was agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding that strengthens joint cooperation between the two sides in all fields, especially in the tourism field to promote Iraqi investment in Jordan in this qualitative sector.

Economic event: IBC Signs a Cooperation Agreement with Jordan INTAJ Association for Communications & Information Technology At IBC Head Office

A Cooperation Agreement was signed at IBC offices on Wednesday August 31st 2022 between the Iraqi Business Council in Jordan and Jordan (INTAJ) Association for Communications and Information Technology, which is a leading Association in Communications and Information Technology in Jordan and the Middle East.

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary General, Dr. Saad Naji, signed the Agreement on behalf of IB and the Association’s Chairman, Mr. Amjad Sweiss, signed on behalf of INTAJ Association in the presence of IBC Director General, Mrs. Abeer Al-Naib and INTAJ Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Nidal Bitar, and attendance of representatives of IBC member companies; Mr. Hussein Al-Kurd / Al-Mustashar Engineering Company, and representatives of Al-Jazeera Group.

The Agreement aims at strengthening cooperation between IBC member companies and INTAJ companies, promoting joint cooperation with regard to organizing conferences and activities that would serve both sides, in addition to organizing periodic meetings to discuss available business and investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral cooperation between members on both sides. During the ceremony, it was agreed to invite members of the Iraqi Business Council to participate in the “Communications Conference”, which will be held in the Dead Sea under patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein where over 80 senior experts and specialists from 28 states will participate in this important event.

Economic event: IBC Holds a Workshop Entitled “Strategic Transformation in E-Commerce”

The Iraqi Business Council held on Wednesday August 24th 2022 a Workshop entitled “Strategic Transformation in Electronic Commerce” which was directed by the Economic Researcher of the Strategic Planning Department in Jordanian Ministry of Industry & Trade, Mr. Muhammad Samara.

During the Workshop, Mr. Samara presented an overview on electronic commerce, its importance in developing the businesses of companies, and talked about the advantages of using the social media in corporate advertisement, considering them only advertising platforms and not strategic transformation for companies.

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary, General, Dr. Saad Naji, welcomed the audience and discussed with Mr. Samara the effectiveness of electronic management in achieving institutional creativity in business institutions, stressing the need for business organizations to keep pace with the technological development by changing their strategy to shift from traditional to electronic management by using modern information and technology in management.

Economic event: IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary General Participates In a Speech on Joint Investment Supportive Environment

IBC Deputy Chairman & Secretary General, Dr. Saad Naji, participated on Sunday August 7th 2022 in a speech on the Joint Investment Supportive Environment in the Innovative Dom Forum for Advancement & Sustainable Development (Fourth Edition), which was held in the Movenpick Hotel – Amman.

Head of Public Relations Department in the Interior Ministry, Major General Saad Maan, also participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, Dr. Saad Naji reviewed the volume of Iraqi investment in Jordan, the momentum of this investment in several vital sectors including tourism, real estate development, all types of industries and the financial and banking sectors.

He also talked about the achievements realized by IBC in serving investors and strengthening economic relations between Iraq and Jordan by promoting a number of key strategic projects between the two countries; the most of important of which the Iraqi – Jordanian Pipeline Project (Basra – Aqaba) and the twinning agreement between Basra and Aqaba Ports and the major role IBC played in strengthening Iraqi investment in Jordan, in addition to its role in promoting investment in Iraq.

During the opening ceremony, the First Deputy Speaker of Jordan Parliament, Mr. Ahmad Al-Safadi, acting on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, and in the presence of the Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Hayder Al-Athari, and representatives of the investment, economic and industrial sectors, Mr. Al-Safadi stressed the need to expand cooperation frameworks between the investors in Jordan and Iraq and developing partnerships with all sectors. Mr. Al-Safadi also pointed out that the Jordanian Parliament will work on strengthening the supportive environment for the advancement of investment sector based on its legislative role.

He also pointed out a package of economic Bills listed on the agenda of the current emergency session, indicating that since the beginning of the session IBC supported the launch of a national dialogue adopted by the relevant parliamentary committees, believing in the importance of consolidating partnership and effective networking with all competent sectors in such a way as to contribute to the advancement of national economy.

For his part, the Director General of the Innovation Dom and Head of the Forum, Counsellor Rani Al-Omari, pointed out the strong relations existing between Iraq and Jordan, stressed the importance of the Forum in strengthening partnerships and making recommendations to the authorities concerned to facilitate the business of investors in both countries.

Also, the Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan stressed the importance of strengthening mutual investment opportunities, especially that political, security, economic and legislative conditions are now ripe for more partnerships in the investment aspect, whether at the level of public or public sectors.

The Forum also discussed several headlines, especially joint investment between Amman and Baghdad and ways to develop laws and regulations that sponsor investment between the two countries with the participation of government and private agencies concerned with investment in both countries.

The sessions of the first day of the Forum focused on joint investment between Amman and Baghdad and the legal aspects in this framework.

The sessions discussed related topics in the field of investment, pioneering models and distinguished experiences in the foreign investment sector.

The Iraqi Business Council was honored in recognition of its active contribution to the successful International Innovation Dom Forum, and Dr. Saad Naji was honored in appreciation of his active contribution as speaker in the sessions of the Forum.
